NGK Spark Plugs

NGK Motorcycle Spark Plugs are among the most widely used and trusted ignition components for motorcycles worldwide. Manufactured by NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. (now under the Niterra group), the company was founded in 1936 in Nagoya, Japan, leveraging expertise in high-voltage technical ceramics. NGK has long been an OEM supplier to major motorcycle manufacturers, particularly Japanese brands such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki, as well as many European and other makers.

Core Technology and Design

NGK spark plugs typically feature a 98% pure copper core in the center electrode. This provides excellent heat dissipation, enabling a wide heat range that performs reliably across varied conditions—from stop-and-go city riding to high-speed or high-revving operation—while helping prevent overheating or fouling.

Key construction elements include:

  • High-grade alumina silicate ceramic insulator for strength, heat resistance, and dielectric performance.
  • Cold-rolled threads and trivalent metal plating (on many models) to reduce the risk of cross-threading or seizing, often eliminating the need for anti-seize compound.
  • Resistor designs (often marked with “R”) for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression, important for modern electronic ignition and fuel-injection systems.
  • Various electrode configurations, including projected insulator tips, multi-ground electrodes, and specialized shapes for better flame kernel growth and reduced quenching.
